After decades behind the wheel of heavy road trains, veteran driver Chris Hughes transitioned into a rewarding driveway transport role that offers a more flexible pace while exploring regional and interstate routes.
At 65, Chris boasts an impressive career journey. His transport experience began in 1984 when he earned his heavy vehicle licence while serving in the Australian Army. Following his military service, he spent two decades working in policing before returning to commercial driving in 2009.
Adelaide has been his home base since 1991.
Returning to Heavy Vehicle Operations
Reflecting on his return to commercial transport, Chris shared, “I realised my heavy vehicle qualifications were sitting there, so putting them back to work made complete sense. Driving has always been a genuine passion of mine, both professionally and in my personal time.”
His initial return to commercial transport involved driving tippers for Lucas Total Contract Solutions. “When an opportunity came up in Western Australia, they helped me upgrade to a Multi-Combination licence. I passed my MC test on Tuesday, and by Wednesday of the following week, I was hauling a road train across the highway from Adelaide to Kalgoorlie.”
Chris later moved to Neil Mansell Transport, spending nearly five years handling demanding long-haul routes before deciding it was time to adjust his routine.

“I naturally gravitate toward the interstate routes. Just recently I completed a delivery to Roma, and I always look forward to Western Australia runs. Longer distances suit me because I genuinely enjoy the journey. I settle into the cab, play an audiobook, and focus on the road ahead. Plus, staying overnight in comfortable hotels means I no longer spend nights sleeping inside the vehicle!
“The team dynamic is fantastic as well. We have built an incredible group of professional drivers in our Adelaide division,” Chris noted.

“While most vehicle movements are individual assignments, we regularly team up for major fleet deliveries. A recent contract required moving a large line of new Kenworths from Melbourne directly to the Adelaide port facility, with our group completing five round trips each.
